About the circuit
The Red Bull Ring is a racing circuit in Spielberg in the Austrian state of Styria, built in the Alpine mountain terrain. The track was inaugurated on 26 July 1969 as the Österreichring (originally 5.911 km long), shortened by Hermann Tilke in 1996 to 4.326 km and renamed the A1-Ring. After closing in 2003, the circuit was bought by Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz in 2004 and, following renovation, reopened in 2011 under its current name. The current 4,326 m layout has 10 corners (7 right, 3 left), the track is 12–13 m wide and features dramatic 65 m of elevation change with a maximum incline of 12% and maximum decline of 9.3%. The circuit holds FIA Grade 1 homologation and since 2014 has hosted the annual F1 Austrian Grand Prix (and in 2020–2021 also the Styrian Grand Prix), MotoGP, DTM and other series. The wider Project Spielberg complex also includes hotels, a vehicle dynamics facility, karting track and off-road area.
Spectacular Styrian mountain setting with dramatic elevation changes (65 m, max gradient 12%); the long uphill braking zones at Turn 1 (Niki Lauda Kurve) and Turn 3 (Remus Kurve) are among the best overtaking spots in Formula 1.
