About the circuit
Circuit Zolder, formerly known as Circuit Terlamen, is a racing circuit in Heusden-Zolder in the Belgian province of Limburg, opened in 1963 to a design by John Hugenholtz. The 4,011 m undulating track has 10 corners. It is one of Europe's historically significant circuits and hosted the F1 Belgian Grand Prix ten times between 1973 and 1984. In 1982, Canadian Ferrari driver Gilles Villeneuve was killed there during qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix; in the years that followed the race moved permanently to Spa-Francorchamps. The track now holds FIA Grade 2 homologation and hosts the Belcar Endurance Championship, the 24 Hours of Zolder, the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series, FIA ETRC truck racing and various other national and international series. Noise limit is 98 dB.
Site of Gilles Villeneuve's fatal qualifying crash at the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix; the corner now bears his name as the "Villeneuve Chicane", built in 1986 at the spot of the accident.
